7 Misconceptions About the Direct Web

 



Direct web is a common term used to describe website traffic that comes from users directly entering a company’s URL in their browser or clicking on a saved bookmark link. This is often thought of as a positive sign since it means that these users are familiar with your brand and want to learn more about your products or services.

Nevertheless, direct web has some deeply entrenched misconceptions that make it difficult for marketers to gain an accurate understanding of this type of traffic. For example, Google Analytics doesn’t always record the full referral URL. This is a big problem because it can cause you to miss out on analyzing your traffic data.

Most people think that direct web is all about users typing in your website URL or clicking a saved bookmark link, but it’s actually not as straightforward as that. This is why you should never assume that traffic is 100% direct.

1. Most apps and non-web documents don’t send a referrer data.

The main reason for this is that most apps and non-web documents strip out the referrer information from their links. This is especially true with mobile apps.

2. If a user clicks on a link to your HTTP site from a secure page (HTTPS) that leads to a non-secure page (HTTP), the referrer data will be stripped out and all sessions of this type are reported as direct traffic. This is because it was part of the security protocol and cannot be avoided.
